Hearing God's voice and God's Provision

Just a quick up-date on where we currently are and what God is doing in our lives. We are in BV at the moment and preparing for our new arrival! Baby Cortese. (We are not sure of names yet or sex).
We have been moving towards full time ministry and  establishing accountability and support with our home church Cornerstone.

I just want to take a moment to share with you about God's awesome provision in our lives.

About 4 months ago now, I(Luke) was looking through craigslist for a car. Our main vehicle at that time was a 90' oldsmobile cutlass and was not running that well. It has been great for around town but we were a little scared to try to take it to the city.
Anyhow, I was looking on craigslist for a Jeep Cherokee. Something reliable and 4wheel drive that we could use in the snow and be able to get in the mountains too.

I had just found a really good deal and was getting ready to call on it. It was perfect (or so I thought). It was priced reasonably and had low miles and it looked really nice too!

Before calling I felt led to pray about it first. "Lord is this right? Is this the one we should go for? It seems perfect!".  As I prayed I felt God impress on my heart, "No. Don't call. I am going to give you a vehicle."

It took me a few minutes to come down from my excitement over the car. And then I decided to listen and not call.

Since that time, I kept hesitating every time the thought of getting a new vehicle come into the picture. I kept waiting, hoping for what I heard God say.

3 months later, we are still waiting and getting a little anxious about our little blue beast that continued to get louder and louder and a little more sketchy to drive.
One of those days (about a month ago now) I was driving our cool little car and I prayed, "God. When are you going to give us that car like you said you would?" (I was getting pretty anxious to look for a vehicle)

A few hours later that same day I got a call from Brooke. "So..." Brooke said, "I just off the phone with (one of our friends from church that had recently moved) ..and ...she's giving us her car."

"WHAT?" I said. "Yeah, she said that God had really been putting us on her heart lately. She's getting a new car and feels like God wants her to give us hers!"

My eyes began to tear up as I realized what was happening. God was fulfilling His word to me that He had spoken 3 months earlier. "Wow. Thank you so much God." was all I could say.

Not only this, but the car we were given was exactly what we had been praying for. An SUV with 4wheel drive, perfect for getting into the mountains and driving in the snow! It is perfect. It is a 2001 GMC Jimmy. 4 doors, 4wheel drive, seats 5,  It has about 10,000 miles on a completely rebuilt engine and runs great!

We are so, so blessed!

The Best Part

But honestly, the vehicle is not the best part to me. HEARING GOD'S VOICE IS!
The fact that He spoke to me personally and specifically and then 3 months later did it, is more satisfying to me than any material thing I could ever have or get.

HE DOES SPEAK!

He desires to speak to us. Everyone of us. He desires to speak to you.
But I think we over complicate it sometimes. (at least I know I do).
We try to put God in a box or limit Him to a certain way of how it should look, but He does not operate that way.

Proverbs 25:2- Says, "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings to search out a matter."

I believe one of the greatest adventures and privileges is to seek God out. To look for Him, seek Him, desire and ask for Him.
He desires for us to seek Him out. It is that ever increasingly wonderful game of hide-and-seek.
And how wonderful it is to find Him. For Him to reveal Himself to me.

In Jeremiah 29:13 God says, "You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart. I will be found by you."

May we all seek God out with all our heart. It is hard sometimes. But it is so worth it to find Him. In doing so we find what life is all about!

And for now, praise God with us for His awesome, thoughtful, and perfect provision!

He is SO good!

Jesus, Prostitues and Us!

Prostitution and Jesus

On our recent trip to Romania, one of the many incredible ways that God worked was in a prostitution operation several buildings down the street from our hostel.

Situation-
In the heart of Bucharest, we found ourselves with the issue of prostitution and slave trafficking heavy on our heart.

“Ok God, we’re here. What do you want to do?” We prayed. “Please do something that only You can do. Accomplish something that is only possible with You.

And how He did!

There are several situations that I could write about that were incredible. All of these situations created a common thread that ran through out our trip.

But for now I will only write about one, and an incredible one at that.

Just a few buildings down from where we were staying God decided to move in a way that could have only been orchestrated by Him. What took place, involved elements that ranged from a church service, pimps, a woman’s cry for help and people on the other side of the world; All progressing in an beautiful order that would eventually lead to the restoration of souls precious in His sight.

Story

On our way back from a Gypsy church service, Caleb and I were offered a prostitute just a few buildings down from our hostel. With the hope of tackling this issue while there, yet a little taken aback, we told them that we would maybe come back.

We walked away as the adrenaline started to set in; thoughts beginning to fill our heads. “Ok, what do we do? This is the very reason we are spending these last few days here in Bucharest.”

After praying for wisdom and discussing the situation among ourselves we decided that we would go and buy ourselves a prostitute with the intent of purchasing her time. Our hope was to get her perspective and share the gospel with her.

“Ok, here we go! This is my first time buying a prostitute. I have no idea what we are doing, but let’s do this.”

The initial engagement was awkward to say the least. Not being a pro at this, we walked up to them and said hello.
The group dynamic had now changed and there were several people there, all part of the “group”. Several women and a few men gathered around a car, smoking and trying to stay warm by taking turns sitting in the car.

Immediately the woman closest to us engaged us in English and asked us if we wanted a prostitute. The conversation progressed for a few moments as the group became more and more confused with what we wanted to do.

“You just want to talk?” Turning to the others to translate what we were saying.

After explaining a few times what we wanted and working out a price, the prostitutes got out of the car. At that point we began to realize that the amount of English that these prostitutes could speak was minimal and that it was going to be extremely hard to communicate anything with these women. Details. Quite a few people in Romania speak English well.

This is the point that became the most awkward.

They were confused with what we wanted and Caleb and I were looking at each other wondering what to do since communication was limited with the prostitutes.

At that point there was thorough awkwardness and I decided to explain to the woman interpreting the reason why we were there.

“The real reason why we are here is because we believe there is a better way than this. Life doesn’t have to be like this and we want to share with you the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. We want to share His love for you and that He has a better way of life for you than this.”
(We shared along those lines)

As the woman translated, everyone standing around listened intently. We continued to share and the woman continued to translate.
After a few moments, one of the men decided that we weren’t good for business and began to herd the prostitutes back into the car.

But the woman who was translating remained interested and listened carefully to everything I shared.

As the car drove off we found ourselves with this woman and a man that had stayed behind. (Who later, we found out was the father of her children.) Her name was Kati and his was George.

“I prayed to God today to give me help” the woman said. “I am in a very bad situation and I do not know what to do.”

I began to get excited, knowing that God was up to something.

As we continued to talk we came to find out that we were just outside this woman’s home and that her role in this prostitution outfit was the renting out of her home in order for the women to service their clients. She also translated as well as.

We found out that this was her family’s only source of income and that she and her four children relied on the income to eat.

She invited us into her home to talk more and explain why we had come to her talking about God.

God’s amazing work

Come to find out, the woman we were now talking with had cried out to God for help earlier that day. Her husband George, was cheating on her with another woman, she had four children and was pregnant with her fifth. They barely had enough money to survive and everyday prostitutes were using her home for their clients while her children played in the next room over.

She needed out. She just wanted to leave. But there didn’t seem to be a way out. Kati also told us that she wanted an abortion because she couldn’t afford another child. She didn’t know what to do.

What Kati didn’t know, but was coming to find out, was that God had been orchestrating this day in order for her to come to Him and find hope.

We shared the gospel with her and urged her not to abort her baby. We talked with her about the possibility of her going to her mother’s home just outside the city in order to get away from her situation.

She was open to much of what we shared, but things still seemed hopeless.

Because of the late hour we decided to pray with her and leave the situation until the next day. She and her husband (who ironically was there but did not understand English) invited us back to talk further.

As we walked home our hearts hurt with the dilemma. “Do we help this woman leave her husband? … How do we do this? We would so much rather God restore them.”
Before heading to bed we prayed for the situation and looked to the morning to come.

The next day, God moved powerfully.

In the morning Caleb and Josh headed strait over to the couple’s house. Brooke and I followed shortly after.
As we walked in, Caleb was sharing with George about why he could no long treat his wife the way he was.

Come to find out, the man had recently accepted Christ but had apparently not been taught much in the way of how to leave his former life. He was searching for life but in all the wrong ways.

Caleb shared from the Bible, as the man seemed to absorb everything he was saying.

“Christ is the only way that you can find the true and lasting peace you are looking for.”

When Brooke arrived, we began talking about the baby and encouraging Kati to keep her baby.

There are many details that took place; so many of which were amazing evidence of God’s handiwork. One of those amazing things was George’s cousin who arrived that morning. He and his wife had committed to follow Christ not long before. In fact, they had been in the same situation that George and Kati now found themselves in; renting their home out for prostitution and in a desperate situation.

Eventually, after much sharing and encouraging George and Kati made reconciliation. George decided that he wanted to be a ‘one woman man’, committed to his family. God brought them forgiveness for each other and they decided they wanted to follow God and trust Him for their provision.

After confessing to each other and forgiving one another, we prayed together for God’s restoration.

I cannot say that I have ever felt God’s power in my hands physically before this time.

But, as we prayed, I had one hand on George and one on Kati. It felt like electricity was flowing from my hands onto them. All of us felt the power in that room.

I also noticed that their bodies twitched as if little electric currents were running through them. To say the least, God was there.

After praying, George said that he felt like it was all gone. All that had been happening.

“I feel like everything is gone”, he said, referring to the situation they were in. Kati confirmed as well that she felt so different, that all of the hurt and the negative thoughts that had been in her were gone.

It was an amazing experience!

So full of God’s hope and love and peace. How good He is!

Before leaving, we commissioned George’s cousin and his wife to disciple them and to walk with them the journey of relying on God for their provision. Having been established in this, they could now walk with George and Kati and encourage them to follow God as they did now.

God answered our prayer. He did what was only possible with Him.

What we did not know until later was that all the way on the other side of the world God had been working as well.

We came to find out that, during those crucial hours of encouragement and commissioning of George and Kati, God had burdened a group of believers from our church at those very moments to pray for us.

He was not only working there and in the physical, He was working in the spiritual in places around the world; all for one very important issue on His heart!

What an amazing testament to the incredible intricate work that God does! He had orchestrated such an amazing event that would have been impossible to arrange any other way.

There is no way we could have come up with such a wonderful plan as this one.

It is so good to walk with Him and be in awe of all the wonderful things He does!

Insignificant

Insignificant

You may be able to relate with this story. It is powerful what God can do, yet I find myself so often in situations where I feel so insignificant. Maybe that is where you find yourself too.
You want to do good and it is in your heart to make an impact, but you feel helpless and insignificant. You’re not sure what to do. Or even where to start.

Well that is exactly where Brooke and I found ourselves, standing on the second floor of a TB (tuberculosis) Hospital in Mumbai, India, looking out over a room filled with women dying of a curable disease. Yet unable to pay for their cure.
There they are and there you are. Looking at each other and wondering what happens next. You see their faces and their tired looks as their eyes cry out for help and your heart leaps and yearns and breaks to do something. But what!!?!!

How do you help someone in that situation? Or better yet, how do you help hundreds of “someone’s”, all in need of the same help?

I’ve never felt quite so helpless in that moment.

Isn’t that the way it seems though? There is so much need. There are so many problems in this world, so much suffering. And here we are. We see it. We hear about it. But what can we do?
The question seems so hard to answer. So we look away for lack of any other solution. We harden our hearts. And eventually we forget about it. Until the next time; Or until it happens so often that we build an immunity to compassion. It slowly suffocates our hearts to the point of hardly being able to tell the difference between reality and the daze we live in, called our daily routine. (I speak of my own journey)

Does this happen because we do not care? No. We do care. This happens because we don’t know what to do. We feel helpless. We feel Insignificant.

It is out of this weakness that God did something incredible; something that shook the very depths of eternity.

Back to the second floor, back to the awkwardness. Back to the heart, wrenching and writhing with pain, wanting to do something. But not knowing what......
So we did the only thing that we knew how to do….. “Namaste” ……..It is the greeting used in in this part of the world to say hello; a type of blessing.

As insignificant as it seemed, it literally was all that we could come up with in that moment.  There is no way we could pay for every woman to be cured. We were powerless to fix their situation.

With each greeting and each hand held, our hearts were screaming, “I WISH I COULD HELP YOU BUT I DON’T KNOW HOW!!!” …. We didn’t even know how to have a conversation without our translator.

Making our way around, one of the women asked for Brooke to pray for her. Asking our only translator to come over, Brooke was able to find out what the woman was asking of her.
With the help of Irene, our wonderful translator, Brooke began to pray. Pleading with God to heal this woman and to comfort her and that she would recover (as sometimes happens)….
As Brooke began praying, a group began to gather. Other women and young girls, also wanting to be prayed for and wanting to see what was taking place came. Soon, there was a large group, all gathered around watching what would take place.
Looking back it all seems like a blur, but as Brooke finished praying I felt God prompt me to say something.
“Those who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Acts 2:21/ Romans10:13.
It was  like God just put that phrase into my mind. It was almost as if I was watching God use my body to speak.
I proceeded to share with them through our interpreter that if they called on the name of the Lord, that they would be saved. Immediately God brought to mind the hope that He had given us through the tragedy of loosing my sister Abby in a car accident 2 years before.
“Many of you are facing death and are fearing the loss of someone you love. But this is not all there is. There is more.” I shared my personal experience with loosing Abby. I explained how I was able to have hope and still have joy because I know I am going to see her again, and that they too can have that same hope. That if they called on the name of the Lord, on the name of Jesus, they too could be saved and have a new hope.
Our translator took it from there, powerfully sharing the gospel with them and presenting them with an opportunity to receive this same hope.
Immediately, about 11 women put their hand up, wanting to receive this hope and call on the name of Jesus. In great joy we proceeded to pray with them and lead them into that spiritual "rebirth" that Christ offers us through accepting His payment for our sin.
It was so amazing! I have never seen anything like it! I have never seen such a transformation take place in someone’s eyes like that. It is almost as if their eyes went from blank and hollow to shining and full of life. We literally witnessed their spirit "reborn."

The contrast sticks in my mind, like an irretrievable splinter. Stark and clear, one that will never be removed, nor do I want it to be.
I wish I could describe to you the difference in the faces of those who knew Christ and those who did not. It was almost as if the latter were empty vessels, moving about, while those had received Christ were radiant, even though sick, full of life and hope and joy. It is something you would have to see for yourself. It was their spirit coming alive for the first time. Reborn into a newness of life that did not depend on physical circumstances. 2 Corinthians 4:16

Incredible!

Even now as I recount this, I am filled with such joy. Thank you God for what You did there!

And there we were, filled with joy and wonder and excitement at what God had just done. Eye witnesses to a literal, physical, and spiritual change that had just taken place. And just moments ago were in such a weak and vulnerable place.

I think I learned something that day at the TB Hospital. I had nothing to offer. We had nothing to offer. All we had was a simple “hello”.
But God in His goodness, used a simple little couple with nothing to offer to literally change the course of eternity for these 11 women. Never again will eternity be the same. And neither will these women.

God orchestrated everything so wonderfully.

It just so happened that there was another patient there who was a believer already and who had a bible. She and our translator discussed how they might encourage and help these women who had just received a new life.

I guess the biggest thing I learned was that I don’t have to be special to see God work. I don’t have to have all the answers. And I don’t have to be comfortable.
All that God really desires of us is a willing heart. A heart that wants what He wants and to simply use what He provides.

In our case, all we had was a “hello”… talk about not much. But it was enough. More than enough! And He did the rest.

I just want to encourage you to not let your heart die out. Not to let your circumstances or your “qualifications” dictate whether you are a part of helping someone or seeing God do something incredible.
God just wants your heart. God just wants what you do have (even if it only is your heart and nothing else)
Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 ….. How true it is, as we have seen. His power is made perfect in our weakness.

It was incredible to experience this first hand and to see that all I need to do is make myself available. He does the rest.

May you be encouraged and may you be challenged to seek after God with all your heart!
I think you will be pleasantly surprised. His goodness never ends.

Praise be to God!

Amen
